The idea
You probably know the game friends play all the time: one person names a club, the other names a different club, and both try to find a player who has played for both teams. Who Played Both puts that game on screen. Two players secretly pick the clubs, the clubs are revealed at the same moment, and whoever is first to come up with a common player wins the round.
A round, step by step
- Club pick (10 seconds). Both players pick and lock in a club at the same time, without seeing each other's choice. You can find a club by browsing through the leagues with the arrows or by typing its name to search.
- Reveal. The two clubs appear on either side of the screen at the same moment. The target is now clear: a footballer who has played for both of these clubs.
- Answer race (15 seconds). Start typing the name of the player you have in mind. As you type, players matching that name are listed below; pick the one you know is right from the list. The list is drawn from all the players in the database, so it never gives the answer away. Players who share the same name are told apart by their birth year and nationality.
- Result. Whoever picks a correct player first wins the round, and that player is shown in the middle of the screen.
Cards and the end of a match
- Every wrong answer is a yellow card. The third wrong answer is a red card and the round is over for you.
- The first to win 3 rounds wins the match.
- Within one match, each footballer counts only once. If you type an answer that has already been given, you won't get a card, but you won't score either.
- Each player can pick the same club at most twice in a match, so think carefully about when to play your strongest club.
Game modes
- Vs the bot: Works without an internet connection. The bot comes in four levels: Amateur, Professional, Elite and Legend. As you win, your bot rating goes up and your opponent gets tougher. This progress is stored only on your own device. If you like, you can limit a match to a single league, for example only Süper Lig clubs.
- Vs a friend: You create a room, send the room code or invite link to your friend, and the two of you play the same match.
- Ranked match: You are matched with an opponent close to your rating. As you win, you move up tiers and appear on the weekly leaderboard. Requires an account.
- Leaderboard: The overall rating ranking and that week's leaderboard.
Online modes are available while the game server is up. Vs the bot mode always works.
Which clubs are included?
Europe's big five leagues (England, Spain, Italy, Germany, France) and the Turkish Süper Lig. You can pick both this season's clubs and former clubs that have played in these leagues since the 2012/13 season. Former clubs appear with a "former" label on the club selection screen.
Tips for winning
- Avoid the easy pairs. Picking two giant clubs makes things easy for your opponent too. Pairs of clubs that swap players often but don't spring to mind straight away will put you ahead.
- Remember the short spells. Players who stayed at a club for only a season or two are often the answers your opponent thinks of last.
- Think players, not managers. Only players who have actually played for those clubs are accepted as answers.
- Start typing early. The first few letters of the surname are often enough to narrow down the list. You don't have to type the full name.
- Risk a yellow card, but be careful. An answer you're unsure about will cost you a card; if you already have two, think hard before risking the third.
- Save your club picks. Since you can pick the same club at most twice in a match, keep the club you know best for the key moments of the match.
